The blistering and buoyant debut album of the Eco-Music Big Band, Colors of Resistance evokes a pioneering and panoramic aesthetic, honoring avant-garde big band music, while also drawing upon classical-turned-jazz motifs, hip hop, heavy metal, Latin rhythms, blues forms and even theatrical performance art. The album features original compositions by some of the most promising artists on the scene today: Livio Almeida, Felix Del Tredici, Marie Incontrera, Albert Marques, Zack O’Farrill, and Stefan Zeniuk. This work is also fiercely intergenerational, celebrating the five decade career of bass trombonist and composer David Taylor; and reimagining iconic works by the late Chinese-American composer and baritone saxophone virtuoso Fred Ho and late composer and trumpeter Cal Massey. Colors of Resistance is ultimately an ode to freedom: to create without compunction and to oppose any type of oppression. It’s a mantra that maestro Marie Incontrera has taken to heart, awakened by the teachings and inspiration of the band’s founder Fred Ho. In fact, during their final conversation, Fred remarked, “all the colors of resistance... all the colors of life... hold them...” On this album, we hear freedom in its many shades – boundless, bountiful, and beautiful.
